How many of you out there have Celiac problems and don't even know it. Statistics show that 1 out of every 134 people in the USA have this problem. Only a few get diagnosed.
I was diagnosed in May of 2007. Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disorder that affects the small intestines.
The symptoms vary from person to person. Some of them are:
1. intestinal gas.
2. bloating
3. constipation or diarrhea.
4. irritable bowel syndrome
5. weight loss
6. coughing with no cold symptoms
7. dizziness
8. headaches
9. indigestion
10. heartburn
11. symptoms of acid reflux
I myself had the diarrhea, bloating, weight loss, dizziness and headaches. My primary doctor ordered a blood test and stool sample. The blood test is called a Celiac Panel. Most labs don't do them unless specified by your doctor after all the other tests failed to diagnose the disease.
The celiac count is supposed to be below 20. Mine was 146. It took me 3 months to get the count down into the 20's.
The problem lies with wheat, barley, and rye gluten and sometimes oat. It destroys the lining of the small intestines. No nutrients get into your system. The disease destroys the "villi" that absorbs the nutrients into your system.
So if you think you might have Celiac Problems, please go to a doctor and ask for a Celiac Panel blood test.
The only way to control this disease is with diet. There is no magic pill. I feel the best I've felt in 15 years.
In my next post, I will tell you what you can and cannot eat.
So stay tuned
